The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is a great way to spend half a day in North Georgia. It departs from the train depot in Blue Ridge and travels north along the Toccoa River to McCaysville, GA on the Tennessee border. We had hoped for beautiful fall colors but the leaves were still green. It was still a great day.
We chose to ride the open cars. Having made reservations on the 10:00 a.m. train, the one hour ride north was a bit nippy but we came prepared with fleece and outer windbreakers. The ride back was very pleasant with higher temps and sunshine.
There were many scenic views along the river such as fly fisherman and the old Indian fishing traps. Residents along the river waved as they went about their daily chores. On the way back three or four fisherman along the river decided we needed some excitement so they mooned the train as it rolled by.
Blue Ridge is a quaint little town with many shops. If you like antiques there are quite a few shops here. We particularly enjoyed the Coffee Shop located in the old bank building that offered live entertainment. This was the first coffee shop we've visited that displays products for sale in the safe.
